Dane County Jail Roster Overview

The Public Safety Building Jail is operated by the Dane County Sheriff's Office and is described in county planning material as the maximum-security intake center. A detail page may then show the building field, such as PUBLIC SAFETY BUILDING, and a housing area code.

Public Safety Jail Contact

The Public Safety Building is the location for several public-facing jail tasks. The main Sheriff's Office number is used for general jail contact. The Sheriff's Records Section has its own phone and email for report and record requests, and the records counter is in the second-floor main lobby. Bail and release payments are handled at the first-floor Bail/Release window.

Records requests may be made through the Sheriff's online records request form. Dane County's research notes that prepayment may be required for requests over $5 and for photos, video, or audio, and processing may take up to three business weeks.

Dane County Jail Visitation Records

Dane County Jail visits are non-contact visits scheduled through the GTL/ViaPath visitation portal. The Sheriff's visitation page says each resident is allowed two 45-minute non-contact visit slots per week. Walk-up visits are not honored, and visits require 48-hour advance sign-up. Visitors should expect to register, provide identity information, and follow the jail's conduct and dress rules.

The Dane County visitation rules page is the official place to confirm visit registration and timing before travel. The schedule can change when jail operations, health rules, court movement, or building security needs affect access.

Public Safety Jail Mail Records

Resident mail for Dane County Jail uses the Public Safety Building address even when a resident is housed in another Dane County jail building. Mail should include the resident name and name number, followed by Dane County Jail and the Doty Street address. The Sheriff's mail page says the mail process changed to reduce contraband risk, so senders should check the current jail mail page before sending photos, cards, books, or other items.

CAMP and Jail Diversion are separate from the jail commissary process. Dane County says Jail Diversion/CAMP is the only local option for eligible sentenced residents with Huber privileges now that the county no longer runs a separate Huber Work Release facility.

Public Safety Jail Bail Records

The Bail/Release window is on the first floor of the Public Safety Building. The Sheriff's bail information page says the jail accepts cash, money orders, or cashier's checks for all bail. For residents going through the Dane County Court system, credit-card bail may be available with Visa, MasterCard, Discover, Diners Club, or American Express if credit is approved. Out-of-county money orders and cashier's checks are checked for authenticity.

Bond does not always mean release. A resident may have a no-bond hold, a probation or parole hold, an outside hold, or a pending court event that keeps the person in custody. Wisconsin bail statutes and the Dane County returning-bail page also warn that bond money may be applied to restitution or judgment and may be held after case disposition when restitution is pending.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office app is another official mobile route. The app launch page says it includes local inmate search, jail information, active warrants, tips, push notifications, and news. The research did not find that inmate search is app-only, so the website roster remains the core public lookup tool.
